In earlier issues of Perspective, we’ve published a series of Scott Donnellan’s Radio Spots. Inspired by Scott’s efforts, LANCE JACKSON has contributed a few of his own. The spots have aired regularly on “Radio Great Lakes FM 101.5” on behalf of the local Ministers’ Fraternal. Check out this example, and feel free to recycle it for your own use. (Here’s a hint… they make good sermon illustrations, too!)
Who’s in Charge?
In 1967, in Ohio, USA, 18 skydivers jumped from a plane at 20,000 feet. The ground was obscured by cloud. At the appointed signal, the 18 skydivers jumped.
When they came through the cloud, all they could see was water! Imagine what they felt. Either the Pilot, or his instruments had been at fault and 16 of the skydivers were drowned. These men had trusted the pilot to guide them to a safe landing but human error, or mechanical failure ended in tragedy.
The Bible points us to a Pilot who is infallible and totally reliable: “God is our refuge and strength; who will guide me and lead me as He has promised”
God leads his people to safe landings. He led his people from slavery in Egypt to the promised land. With a star he led the Wise men to the manger of the Messiah. He is our “pilot” through life .. we can put our trust in Him with confidence.

Heading in the Right Direction!
I cringe when I see youngsters on bicycles riding against the flow of traffic. I’m sure some do it out of convenience; others because they are ignorant of the danger and that it is against the Law; and others have been taught it is safer to face the oncoming traffic. As dangerous and frightening as that is, there are people taking even greater risks with their own lives. People who are also “travelling in the wrong direction”. These are people living without any regard for God.
Some are aware that it’s dangerous to live without God, but seem willing to take their chances. Others are ignorant of the fact that a life without God means an eternity without Him too. Then there are others who have been influenced to believe that it’s OK to live without God.
God’s view is clear.. He sent His Son to show the way. Jesus said: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one goes to the Father except by me” And there’s nothing surer – riding against the flow is going to end up in tragedy.

Something New
Have bought, or been given, something new lately? How did its “newness” affect you?
There’s something about “newness” – a new car, a new dress, a new home, new boyfriend or girlfriend. Something new brings a “freshness” into our lives. A sense of hope, or challenge.
When parks and gardens burst with new growth and splendour in the spring .. well, many a poem and many a song have tried to capture the vitality of spring. My God is the God of new things, of new creations.
He tells in the Bible of the time when “all things will be made new” – but even now, He is able to make “all things new”... to restore friendships and relationships; to restore the right use of resources; to turn rebellion into positive energy; to ease your hurt and remove your guilt.
God is working toward the time when “there will be no more death, no more grief, or crying, or pain.” Doesn’t that sound like Heaven?
