Media Watch: Radio Active #2 ::

A second batch of short, punchy spots written for local radio in country NSW (Australia). Maybe try your local station for a regular spot, or recycle these in some other way…

In NSW country town of Inverell, SCOTT DONNELLAN is a Radio Star… well, not quite. But as part of the Minister’s fraternal Religious programming, Scott produces regular 60 second spots for Radio Station 2NZ. What’s the formula for success? “Good spots should grab the listener’s attention and hold it,” says Scott. “You need to be concise and catchy, and you need to have something worthwhile to say.” Take a look at this second batch and feel free to recycle them on your own local radio station, or any other situation you can think of...

Radio Spot 1:
FLYING BY TRUST

One of the hardest lessons that pilots have to learn is to trust their plane’s instruments. The problem is, when you’re flying at 10,000 feet, your senses can deceive you. You might be thoroughly convinced that you’re flying south – but if the compass says you’re heading north – then you have to trust what the compass says. Similarly, if a plane is surrounded by swirling mist and buffered by a strong wind – the pilot can think that he’s gone into a nose dive. But, if the plane’s gyroscope says that he’s flying steady, then he’d better trust his instruments. To trust in his senses would be disastrous. You know, life’s like that.
We may think we’re heading in the right direction. But just as the pilot has to trust his instruments, we need to trust Jesus and follow his ways. For his ways, are always better than ours.

Radio Spot 2:
RECOGNISING REALITY

Back in the days of the Silent Movies when Charlie Chaplin was all the rage, they used to put on Charlie Chaplin look alike competitions. Contestants would dress-up with run down suits, bowler hats, walking sticks and tiny moustaches.
Of course Charlie Chaplin that is the real Charlie Chaplin was a bit of a practical joker. One day he actually decided to enter himself in a Charlie Chaplin look alike contest.
Can you guess what happened? Well, he actually lost. It sounds unbelievable, I know. But when the real thing turned up – they didn’t recognise him.

It’s a bit like Jesus. People are longing for someone who’ll give them meaning and purpose in life. And the truth is, he’s already come – and we didn’t recognise him – in fact, we killed him.

Radio Spot 3:
POTENTIAL DIFFERENCES

In a recent survey, they asked people what they would change about themselves in order to fulfil their potential as human beings.
Can you guess what the top answers were? The things ‘which most people wanted to change about themselves were their body, their hair, their age, their face, and – you guessed it their bank balance.
You know, hardly anyone expressed any interest at all in changing their inner characteristics, such as kindness or generosity. It’s a sad indictment on our society really, because it tells us that most of us think that in order to be fulfilled in life, we need to change all the things which ultimately have no value. The Bible tells us that the only way you and I can find that sort of fulfilment is to strike up a friendship with Jesus Christ.

Why don’t you check out what the Bible has to say?

Radio Spot 4:
THE ULTIMATE ACCESSORY

Recently I heard about a yabbie farmer who had bred a new breed of yabbie – it’s coloured a brilliant blue. His hope is that blue yabbies will catch on, and that soon they’ll be found in the fish tanks of every upwardly mobile household in Australia.
After all, the colour of your yabbie does make a statement about who you are. That’s one smart yabbie farmer if you ask me.
Isn’t it sad that so many people think their value in life is determined by the premium products they surround themselves with – the beautiful partner, the cars with pop-up headlights, or the poor yabbie who’s not the colour he should be.

Don’t you think it’s about time that we woke up to the fact that our significance in life has got nothing to do with these things – and everything to do with the fact that we are created by God in order to serve him?

Radio Spot 5:
Job SATISFACTION

The former U.S. Secretary of State, James Baker, once said that his job was one of the most glamorous and important jobs in the world. He travelled the globe meeting with the most important leaders – resolving issues which affected the whole of humanity.
And yet, he said, one day I was being driven through the streets of Washington DC in my limousine and I noticed a lonely old man walking the street. As I passed him, I recognised him he was a former U.S. Secretary of State.
Baker stated that he did not look to his job for fulfilment in life – he knew that one day he’d be like the man walking the street. Instead, he said, “I’ve already found my fulfilment, in having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.”
